What to Expect in Your First Muay Thai Class in Abbotsford

Starting Muay Thai can feel intimidating when you have never trained before. You may wonder whether you need to be in shape, whether you will have to spar or whether everyone else in the class will already know what they are doing.

At Burridge Martial Arts in Abbotsford, beginners are welcome. You do not need previous martial arts experience, special equipment or a certain level of fitness to attend your first class.

Here is what you can expect.

What Is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is a striking martial art that uses punches, kicks, knees and elbows. Training also develops footwork, balance, defence, coordination and physical conditioning.

Beginners learn these skills gradually through structured instruction, partner drills, bag work and padwork. You will not be expected to know the terminology or techniques before arriving.

What Should You Wear?

For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move freely.

Good options include:

  • Athletic shorts or leggings
  • A comfortable T-shirt or training shirt

Muay Thai is normally practised barefoot, so indoor training shoes are not required.

Clothing with exposed zippers, metal pieces or anything that could scratch a training partner should be avoided.

What Should You Bring?

Bring a water bottle and any personal items you normally need while exercising.

You do not need to purchase gloves or other specialized equipment before trying your first class. We can explain what equipment you will need if you decide to continue training.

Arriving approximately 10 to 15 minutes early is helpful. This gives you time to find the gym, meet the coach and get ready without feeling rushed.

Burridge Martial Arts is located at 2631 Gladys Avenue in Abbotsford, directly across from Gladys Pet Hospital.

What Happens During Class?

Although each class is slightly different, a beginner-friendly Muay Thai class will usually include:

Warm-Up

The class begins with movements designed to prepare your body for training. This may include light skipping, jogging, mobility exercises or basic Muay Thai movements.

You are encouraged to work at a manageable pace.

Technical Instruction

The coach will introduce one or more techniques, such as the fighting stance, footwork, a jab, a cross, a defensive movement or a basic kick.

Techniques are demonstrated and then broken down into manageable steps.

Drilling and Padwork

You will practise the techniques through controlled drills, often with a partner or on pads.

The emphasis is on learning proper technique—not hitting as hard or moving as quickly as possible.

Conditioning

Some classes include short conditioning exercises related to Muay Thai. Beginners can adjust the intensity and take breaks when necessary.

Fitness improves through consistent training. You do not need to become fit before you begin.

Will I Have to Spar?

No. Beginners are not required to spar during their first class.

Sparring is a separate and controlled part of Muay Thai training for students who have developed the necessary skills, equipment and experience. Participation takes place with coach approval.

Your first classes will focus on learning fundamental movement, technique and safe training habits.

Do I Need to Train With Experienced Students?

Our Adult Muay Thai classes include students with different experience levels. Coaches structure the training so beginners can learn the fundamentals while experienced students continue developing their skills.

Training alongside more experienced students can be helpful because they understand the drills and can help create a comfortable learning environment.

Nobody expects a new student to perform like an experienced martial artist.

Am I Too Old or Unfit to Start?

Adults begin Muay Thai at many different ages and fitness levels.

You do not need to be flexible, athletic or in excellent condition before starting. Training can be adjusted while you become familiar with the movements and gradually improve your fitness.

The most important first step is simply attending and being willing to learn.

How Often Should a Beginner Train?

Many beginners start with two classes per week. This provides enough repetition to begin remembering the techniques while allowing time for recovery.

Some students prefer to train more frequently, while others begin with one class per week. The best schedule is one you can maintain consistently.
